First-Lap clash leaves Van Gisbergen last at Sandown

Original by Supercars, edited by me.

Shane Van Gisbergen picked up his 9th last-place finish of his career when his #97 Red Bull Holden was involved in a two-car crash that ended his race without completing a single lap of the 2nd Qualifying race at Sandown. The finish came in Van Gisbergen's 388th start.

Shane Van Gisbergen is a big face of the sport, with a championship, along with finishing second on three additional occasions. Car #97 was fastest in Practice 1 but fell to 6th in Practice 2. Co-Driver Garth Tander recovered to 4th in Practice 3 but they plummeted to 18th in Practice 4. However, they leapt to 4th in Qualifying.

After a race 1 crash, Chaz Mostert in the #55 Supercheap Auto Ford started the race in the rear, but immediately Macauley Jones in the #21 Cooldrive Distribution Holden fell to the rear.
However, at turn 1 Shane Van Gisbergen in the #97 Red Bull Holden collided with Anton De Pasquale in the #99 Penrite Oils Holden, sending Van Gisbergen to the rear with Steering Damage, sending him to the garage and out of the race. He will start tomorrow's race from last.

The deficit between Wet and Dry tires meant that, despite being hit with the stupidest penalty in the history of Supercars, Anton got out of the bottom 5, which was filled by Jack LeBrocq in the #19 Truck Assist Holden, Scott Pye in the #2 Winning Appliances/Mobil 1 Holden, Garry Jacobson in the #3 Rabble.club Nissan and Macauley Jones in the #21 Cooldrive Distribution Holden.’
