Hard First Lap Crash leaves Slade and Walsh last at Bathurst!

Original by Supercars, edited by me.

Both Tim Slade and Ashley Walsh picked up their 9th last-place finishes of their careers, when their #14 Freightliner Holden was involved in a single-car crash that ended their race without completeing a single lap of the Bathurst 1000. The finish came in Slade's 327th start, and Walsh's 47th start.

Tim Slade has been racing full-time for 11 years, while Ashley Walsh has been racing for 6 years, mostly as a co-driver. They were 16th in Practice 1, but slipped to 18th in Practice 2. They rose to 11th in Practice 3, and climbed to 10th in Practice 4. They then plummeted to 22nd in Practice 5, but shot up to 5th in Qualifying. They finished 3rd in Practice 6, fell to 11th in Practice 7, then ran the Top 10 Shootout in 9th.

Jack LeBrocq and Jonathon Webb started the race in the rear in the #19 truck Assist Holden, however during the warm-up lap Brodie Kostecki in the #56 Boost Mobile Holden had a fan supplying air to the driver burn out, causing a mechical issue that forced him to pull off the track at the exit of Forest Elbow, dropping the Kostecki's to the rear.
Suddenly, at turn 5, Tim Slade in the #14 Freightliner Holden bumps with Scott Pye in the #2 Winning Appliances/Mobil 1 Holden, sending Slade hard into the outside wall, ending his race and dropping him to last.

Next to fall out was Todd Hazelwood and Jack Smith in the #35 SP Tools Holden, after a long pitstop on lap 91, then crashed out at Metal Grate on lap 100, triggering the second safety car of the race.

At about the same time, Anton De Pasquale in the #99 Penrite Oils Holden suffered Mechanical issues, causing him to stall repeatedly on the pit-lane. Following Hazelwood and Smith out were the Kostecki brothers in the #56 Boost Mobile Holden, after hit the wall at the apex of turn 5, then smacked the walls at turns 6 and 7 on lap 112, triggering the third saftey car of the race.

Anton De Pasquale and Will Brown in the #99 Penrite Oils Holden suffered a hung throttle on lap 125 straight into the wall at turn 6, triuggering the fifth Safety Car of the race.

Just when it seemed like Cameron Waters and Michael Caruso in the #6 Monster Energy Ford was finishing last, Andre Heimgartner in the #7 Plus Fitness Nissan crashed out at Forest Elbow on lap 158, dropping him and co-driver Bryce Fulwood to the final spot in the Bottom Five.
