Rookie Garry Jacobson pulls clear in LASTCAR race after finishing last at Townsville

Original by Auto Action, edited by me.

Garry Jacobson picked up his 3rd last-place finish of his career when his #3 Rabble.club Nissan finished under power, 1 lap down in the first race at Townsville. The finish came in Jacobson’s 24th start.

Garry Jacobson is one of two rookies running this year, the other being fellow Virgin Australia LASTCAR contender Macauley Jones. Jacobson was 12th during the rain-affected first Practice, but collapsed to 20th in Practice 2. He slipped to 21st in Practice 3 but qualified 20th.

Michael Caruso in the #33 Boost Mobile Holden started the race in the rear, but by the end of lap 1 Jack LeBrocq in the #19 Truck Assist Holden had fallen to the rear, where he stayed until the followed lap when James Golding in the #34 Boost Mobile Holden fell to the rear. Golding held last until lap 11 when Jack LeBrocq returned to last.

Pitstops began and the race for last place got more interesting. On lap 16 Michael Caruso in the #33 Boost Mobile Holden pitted and fell to the rear. After lap 2 contact with Cameron Waters in the #6 Monster Energy Ford, Andre Heimgartner in the #7 Plus Fitness Nissan fell to the rear during his pitstop on lap 20. Two laps later Macauley Jones in the #21 Cooldrive Distribution Holden pitted and fell to the rear. By Lap 24 LeBrocq had pitted and fallen to the rear. The following lap Scott Pye in the #2 Mobil 1/MEGA Bulk Fuels Holden fell to the rear.

Rejoining the track after his 1st pitstop on lap 27, Cameron Waters in the #6 Monster Energy Ford speared Rick Kelly in the #15 Castrol 100 Years Nissan, sending Kelly to the rear. Waters was then hit by a 15-second penalty.

Kelly held last until lap 41 when Garry Jacobson in the #3 Rabble.club Nissan pitted for the second time and dropped to the rear, followed by LeBrocq after his second pitstop on lap 44, followed by Cameron Waters in the #6 Monster Energy Ford served his 15-second time penalty and dropped to the rear. Before the end of the race, Waters had first passed LeBrocq to drop car #19, then LeBrocq dropped Jacobson to last before the end of the race.

Rounding out the Bottom Five was Jack LeBrocq in the #19 Truck Assist Holden, Michael Caruso in the #33 Boost Mobile Holden, Cameron Waters in the #6 Monster Energy Ford and Scott Pye in the #2 Mobil 1/MEGA Bulk Fuels Holden.
