Late race tire failure leaves Pye last at the Island

Scott Pye picked up his 10th last-place finish of his career when his #17 Pirtek Ford finished under power, 2 laps down in the first race at Philip Island. The finish came in Pye’s 111th race start.

Aaren Russel in the #4 Plus Fitness Holden started the race in the rear, however by turn 1 Dale Wood in the #96 GB Galvanizing/ADVAM Holden had fallen to the rear after almost stalling at the start. By lap 3 Aaren Russell had fallen back to last. On lap 5 pitstops began, and Michael Caruso in the #23 – Nissan fell to the rear. Lap 8 saw Aaren Russel in the #4 Plus Fitness Holden fall back to the rear.

Russell held last until lap 24 When Scott Pye in the #17 Pirtek Ford blew a right-front tire, spearing him off the road at turn 1. Pye dropped 2 laps trying to get back to the pit-lane and fell to last. Scott Pye wouldn’t be the last driver to suffer a right-front tire failure, this fate also befalls Chazz Mostert in the #55 Supercheap Auto Holden on the last lap, dropping him to 23rd.

Splitting Mostert and Russell was Andre Heimgartner in the #3 ABRO/Repair Management Australia Holden. Rounding out the bottom five was Tim Blanchard in the #21 Cooldrive Distribution Holden after he ran off the road, also on the final lap.
