Massive lap 1 crash and near flip leaves Golding last at Townsville

Original by Fox Sports, edited by me.

James Golding (#31 Nulon Chevrolet) finished last for the 5th time after a multi-car crash ended his race without completing a single lap at Townsville. The finish came in Golding’s 150th start.

James Golding has been in and out of Supercars, debuting with the other four in 2017: Richie Stanaway, Jack LeBrocq, Todd Hazelwood, and Anton De Pasquale. He would be a co-driver in 2017 and run a few wildcard races for Garry Rodgers Motorsports before debuting. Golding would race for 2 years, with Garry Rodgers Motorsport closing shop at the end of the year, leaving Golding out of a ride. He would spend the next two years as co-driver for Team 18. Golding replaced Garry Jacobson at Premiair Hire Racing halfway through 2022, where he had raced since. Golding was 22nd in Practice 1, and 23rd in Practice 2, where he would qualify.

Ryan Wood (#2 NTI/Mobil 1 Ford) started the race in the rear, but at the exit of Turn 3, there was contact between

James Golding (#31 Nulon Chevrolet) nearly flipped after contact with Thomas Randle (#5 Castrol Ford), Jaxon Evans (#12 SCT Logistics Chevrolet).

Cameron Waters (#6 Monster Energy Ford), Thomas Randle (#55 Castrol Ford), Ryan Wood (#2 NTI/Mobil 1 Ford), Nick Percat (#10 Bendix Chevrolet) and Richie Stanaway (#62 Nulon Chevrolet) were involved.

Jaxon Evans would pull into the garage with suspension damage while Waters would pit twice with toe damage. Evans would lose 10 laps in repairs. Evans would return to the Garage on Lap 26 and retire shortly after.

Randle’s car would start heavily smoking shortly after the restart, after a Shock Absorber failure, causing the car to porpoise. Repairs would take 5 laps.

Will Davison (#17 Shell V-Power Ford) copped a heavy hit in the rear on Lap 13 from Will Brown (#1 Red Bull/Ampol Chevrolet). James Courtney (#7 Snowy River Caravans Ford) blew an engine on the same lap. Andre Heimgartner (#8 R&J Batteries Chevrolet) spun Davison as the latter attempted to reach the pits.

Lap 30 saw Macauley Jones (#96 Pizza Hut Chevrolet) banged with Kai Allen (#26 Penrite Oils Ford), sending Allen into the tires. Allen bounced off the tires and continued.

Teammates Thomas Randle (#5 Castrol Ford) and Cameron Waters (#6 Monster Energy Ford)
