Back-to-Back Last-Place finishes for Courtney at Barbagallo

Original by speedcafe.com, edited by me

Defending Virgin Australia LASTCAR Champion James Courtney picked up his 18th last-place finish of his career when his #22 Mobil 1/Mega Bulk Fuels/Mobile Truck Washing Holden finished under power, 1 lap down in the first Night Race at Barbagallo. The finish came in Courtney's 413th start.

James Courtney has been racing full-time for 14 years, so he’s a veteran of the sport. He has one championship, and one Last-Place trophy, last year. He was 13th in Practice 1 but dropped to 19th in Practice 2. Courtney slipped farther in qualifying, missing advancing to Qualifying 2, and lined up 20th.

Tim Blanchard in the #77 Petronas Holden started the race in the rear, but Simona De Silvestro in the #78 Harvey Norman Nissan suffered a clutch failure on the start and fell to the rear, followed firstly by Garry Jacobson in the #3 Rabble.club Nissan.

Then at the start of lap 2 Todd Hazelwood in the #35 SP Tools Holden and Mark Winterbottom in the #18 Irwin Holden collided, initially dropping Hazelwood to the rear, then Winterbottom to the rear.

The following lap James Courtney in the #22 Mobil 1/Mega Bulk Fuels/Mobile Truck Washing Holden was sandwiched between two cars, and picked up a flat tire, dropping Courtney to the rear.

Courtney held last until lap 10 when De Silvestro pitted, dropping her to the rear, but she got back past Courtney.

Next to fall to the rear took place on lap 14 when Scott Pye in the #2 Mobil 1/Mega Bulk Fuels/Mobile Truck Washing Holden briefly took last. Finally, on lap 19, Macauley Jones in the #21 Cooldrive Distribution Holden pitted and fell to last. Hazelwood returned to last in his pitstop on lap 21.

Hazelwood held last until Macauley Jones suffered mechanical issues on the #21, which dropped him backwards through the field, eventually landing him in last on lap 43, where he would stay for a couple of laps until Courtney pitted again, dropping to the rear, where he remained for the rest of the race.

Finishing just ahead of Courtney, Jones and Hazelwood was Richie Stanaway in the #33 Boost Mobile Holden and Tim Blanchard in the #77 Petronas Holden.
