Cooper Murray
picked up the 2nd last-place finish of his career when his #9 Tree Cleanup
Specialist/SS Signs Chevrolet finished under power, seven laps down in the
first race at the Adelaide Street Circuit. The finish came in Murray’s 5th
start.
Cooper Murray was
a wildcard for 2024 and the primary driver alongside Craig Lowndes at Sandown
and Bathurst. Cooper Muray qualified tenth but finished last after being
awkwardly mounted by Andre Heimgartner in the #8 R&J Batteries Chevrolet.
Murray would replace Jack LeBrocq aboard the #9 because the latter was
expecting the arrival of his first child. Cooper Murray would be 17th in
Practice 2 when he took over for Jack LeBrocq and remained 17th in Qualifying,
which was abandoned after 5 minutes due to heavy crashes for Richie Stanaway in
the #26 Penrite Oils Ford, the resulting concussion ruling Stanaway out of Race
1, Cameron Hill in the #4 SP Tools Chevrolet and David Reynolds in the #20
Tradie Chevrolet.
Dale Wood in the
#19 Penrite Oils Ford started the race in the rear after he replaced Richie
Stanaway and slowly lost touch with the rest of the field in the early laps.
However, he would not remain last for long.
Cooper Murray in
the #9 Tree Cleanup Specialist/SS Signs Chevrolet pulled into the garage on Lap
11 after the front bumper completely collapsed on car #9, dropping him to last
and losing six laps in repairs. Over the next fifteen laps, Cooper Murray would
remain last. Murray was the only driver laps down until David Reynolds in the
#20 Tradie Chevrolet would challenge Cooper Murray for last place when he
pulled into the garage on Lap 23 with an exhaust issue, losing six laps in
repairs and falling behind Murray for last place.
However, twenty
laps later, the right-front panel would fail again, necessitating Murray to pit
twice to fix it, falling behind Reynolds for last place and losing another lap
in repairs.
Rounding out the
Bottom Five was Dale Wood in the #26 Penrite Oils Ford after sliding off into
the gravel at Turn 5 on Lap 38. Wood managed to escape the bunker without
causing a Safety Car or a Full Course Yellow, Aaron Love in the #3 REDARC Ford
despite a 6th place qualifying position and Tim Slade in the #23 Nulon
Chevrolet.
