Matt Payne picked
up the 3rd last-place finish of his career when his #19 Penrite Oils Ford
finished under power, four laps down in the final race of Season 2024. The
finish came in Payne's 57th start and secured the last-place Championship for
Jack LeBrocq, the 2nd of his career.
Matt Payne is in
his 2nd full-time season in the main game, all of his starts being for Grove
Racing. Payne was 8th in Practice 1 and slipped to 9th in Practice 2. Payne
returned to 8th in Practice 3 and Qualified 11th, barely missing out on the Top
10 shootout.
Bryce Fullwood in
the #14 Middy's Electrical Chevrolet started the race in the rear, but before
the end of the first lap, Kai Allen in the #26 Penrite Oils Ford fell to last.
On Lap 6, Matt Payne in the #19 Penrite Oils Ford had wheel-to-wheel contact with
Nick Percat in the #10 Bendix Chevrolet at Turn 11 on Lap 3, sending Payne into
the tyre barrier, damaging the front and costing Payne 3 laps in repairs. Payne
would hold the entire race last despite many incidents.
Firstly in
Second-Last was Will Brown in the #87 Red Bull/Ampol Chevrolet after being
turned by Brodie Kostecki in the #1 Tree Cleanup Specialist/Hope Energy
Chevrolet at Turn 7 on Lap 9, then Tim Slade in the #23 Nulon Chevrolet after
being spun by Mark Winterbottom in the #18 DeWalt Chevrolet, then Coper Murray
in the #9 Tree Cleanup Specialist/Chiko Chevrolet fell to 2nd last after
winding up in the tyres at Turn 9 on Lap 10 after a bump with Cameron Waters in
the #6 Monster Energy Ford.
Pitstops started
on Lap 20 with James Golding in the #31 Nulon Chevrolet pitting and falling to
2nd last, then Ryan Wood would pit and fall to 2nd last on Lap 22, with Aaron
Love in the #3 REDARC Ford pitting the following lap and falling behind Wood.
Cooper Murray pitted two laps later and dropped to second last, followed by
Mark Winterbottom on Lap 29, the latter serving a time penalty for spinning
Slade.
Kai Allen in the
#26 Penrite Oils Ford suffered rear bumper damage that forced a pitstop on Lap
42, dropping him to 22nd, a lap down.
The final three
wouldn't be filled until the end of the race. Rounding out the Bottom Five was
Aaron Love in the #3 REDARC Ford, Mark Winterbottom in the #18 DeWalt
Chevrolet, and Ryan Wood in the #2 Mobil 1/Truck Assist Ford after a post-race
penalty for pinning Anton De Pasquale.
