Rick Kelly picked up his 9th last-place finish of his career when his #15
Sengled Nissan retired with Engine failure after 34 of the race's 67 laps. The
finish came in Kelly's 536th start.
Rick Kelly is a veteran of this sport. He has been around since 2001, and
has one controversial championship, won in 2006. he was 5th in Practice 1 but
slid to 12th in Practice 2. Kelly would not improve, and be eliminated in Q1,
lining up 12th.
Chris Pither in the #33 Boost Mobile Holden started the race in the rear
after subbing in for Richie Stanaway, who pulled out due to neck troubles, but
after falling off the road at Turn 7, Chaz Mostert in the #55 Supercheap Auto
Ford fell to the rear. Mostert then started climbing through the field, and on
lap 3 he dropped Jack Smith in the #4 JCT Logistics Holden to the rear. Later
in the race, Mostert would be penalised 15 seconds for his 2nd
pitstop on lap 28 after colliding with James Courtney in the #22 Mega Bulk Fuels
Holden.
The first round of pitstops started on lap 4. During these pitstops,
James Courtney in the #22 MEGA Bulk Fuels Holden on lap 4, Chaz Mostert in the
#55 Supercheap Auto Ford on lap 5, Todd Hazelwood in the #35 - Holden on lap 7,
Simona De Silvestro in the #78 Harvey Norman Nissan on lap 9. De Silvestro held
last until lap 18 when Jack Smith in the #4 SCT Logistics Holden pitted and
fell to last.
Disaster then strikes for Mark Winterbottom in the #18 Irwin Tools Holden
on lap 20 after contact with Simona, damaging the tire and sending him to the
pits, dropping a lap. He then had to serve a 15-second time penalty at his
stop, dropping him further behind.
Just as it seemed like Frosty was going to get his first last-place
finish in 6 years, Rick Kelly in the #15 Sengled Nissan suddenly slowed, pulled
into the garage on lap 37, and retired with Engine failure, dropping him to
last. Following Kelly out was Will Davison in the #23 Milwaukee Ford, after
Transaxle failure on lap 57, triggering the only Safety Car of the race. Frosty
would finish 22nd.
Splitting Frosty and Davison was Simona De Silvestro in the #78 Harvey
Norman Nissan. Rounding out the bottom five was Jack Smith in the #4 SCT
Logistics Holden.
