Scott McLaughlin picked up his 11th last-place finish of his
career, while Alexandre Premat picked up his 8th last-place finish of his
career, when their #17 Shell V-Power Ford retired with Engine failure after 74
of the race's 161 laps. The finish came in McLaughlin's 160th start, and
Premat's 75th start.
Alex Rullo and Alex Davison in the #62 Plus Fitness/Castrol
Holden started the race in the rear, and held last throughout the early stages,
dropping a minute behind the leaders by lap 8, and held last until Craig
Lowndes and Steven Richards in the #888 Caltex Holden pitted on lap 17. Alex
Rullo and Alex Davison returned to the rear on lap 19 after a pit-stop, also
dropping a lap. Davison recovered his lap after the pitstops.
Alex Davison held last until lap 39 when Aaren Russell and
Taz Douglas in the #3 Gemini/Plus Fitness pitted a second time. Davison fell
back to last on lap 44 during his pitstop. Another pitstop for Russell and
Douglas drops car #3 to last again on lap 45, and car #3 pulled into the garage
on lap 48 with a foggy windscreen, losing 4 laps.
A broken header for Scott McLaughlin and Alexandre Premat in
the #17 Shell V-Power Ford on lap 48, pitting again on lap 55. The engine
failed on lap 76, causing the first Safety Car of the race, taking them out of
the race and putting car #17 to last on lap 81.
Next to fall out was Lee Holdsworth and Karl Reindler in the
#18 Preston Hire/Fuchs Holden, after Engine failure during their lap 76 pitstop.
Pushed into the garage, car #18 was retired on lap 83.
Holdsworth and Reindler were followed by James Moffat and
Richard Muscat in the #34 Wilson Security Holden, after an initial spin and
contact with the wall at McPhillamy Park on lap 139, then 2 laps later crashing
heavily at Reed Park, ending their race and causing the third safety car of the
race.
Rounding out the bottom five, both crashing with less than
10 laps to go, was Simona De Silvestro and David Russell in the #78 Harvey
Norman Nissan, running 9th on lap 152 Simona caught the outer ripple strip at
the exit of the final corner, spinning her into the inside pit wall, causing
the fourth Safety Car of the race and Mark Winterbottom and Dean Canto in the
#5 Bottle-O Racing Ford after a crash near Forest Elbow with 2 laps to go.
Either avoiding or working their way out of the bottom five
after incidents include 21st place Nick Percat and Andrew Jones in the #8
Clipsal/Boost Mobile Holden, steering failure on the final lap caused Percat to
crash out, 20th place Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell in the #88 Holden Red
Bull Racing Holden after dropping a cylinder about two-thirds of the way
through the race, dropping 37 laps trying solve the issue, 19th place James
Courtney and Jack Perkins in the #22 Mobil 1 Holden after a collision with the
wall at Reid Park just past half-way, losing 14 laps but managing to stay
running at the end and 18th place Garth Tander and James Golding in the #33 Wilson Security Holden after a mid-race crash at the Cutting.
