Chaz Mostert (#1 Mobil 1/Optus Toyota) finished last for the
14th time in his career. Fabian Coulthard finished last for the 16th time. The
finish came after Mostert crashed out after 155 of the race’s 161 laps. The
finish came in Coulthard’s (476th) start.
This is Mostert’s 4th last-place finish of the season,
moving him into 2nd in the last-place championship behind Jackson Walls.
Chaz Mostert is a veteran of the sport, now in his 12th
full-time season. 2015 would’ve been a full-time season, but had a massive
crash at Bathurst 2015 that snapped his leg in half and ended his season. He
raced in 26 races in 2013 for Dick Johnson Racing, then moved to Ford
Performance Racing/Rod Nash Racing/Tickford Racing for 6 years. Mostert moving
to Walkinshaw Andretti United in 2020. Despite a few up and down seasons,
Mostert inherited the 2025 Repco Supercars Championship after Red Bull Racing
choked it away with engine issues.
2026 has been a story of fast but unreliable for both
Mostert and teammate Ryan Wood. Both have 3 last-place finishes.
Fabian Coulthard had 15 seasons full time, with 13 wins and
a best championship result of 3rd in 2017.
Fabian Coulthard started his career with Tasman Motorsports
in 2004. Coulthard moved to Paul Morris Motorsport for a few races in 2006.
Then moved to Team Kiwi Racing for the endurance events.
In 2007 Fabian Coulthard made his full-time debut with Paul
Morris Motorsports. He moved to Paul Cruickshank Racing in 2008. Then on to
Walkinshaw Racing in 2010.
The 2010 Bathurst 1000 saw Fabian Coulthard flip wildly at
the Chase after a left-rear tire blowout.
Coulthard then moved to Brad Jones Racing in 2012 and stayed
for 4 years. Coulthard then moved to DJR Team Penske from 2016 to 2020. He then
saw the final year of his career out at Team Sydney.
His post full-time career was co-driver with Chaz Mostert as
part of Walkinshaw Andretti United.
They were 17th in Practice 1. Fabian then improved to 14th
in Practice 2 for co-drivers only. They then jumped to 3rd in Practice 3.
Mostert and Coulthard then qualified in 16th. Coulthard then finished 20th in
Practice 5, and they improved to 14th in Practice 6. They finally got the
fastest time in the warm-up.
Ryan Wood and Jaxon Evans (#2 Truck Assist/Mobil 1 Toyota)
started the race last after Wood crashed heavily at Forest Elbow during
Practice 4.
Before the race began, however, Jack Perkins (#11 Objective
Ford) pitted with power steering issues. The issues dropped Perkins to last.
He wouldn’t stay last long, as Tony D’Alberto (#38 Shell
V-Power Ford) pushed James Moffat (#34 Repco/Valvoline Chevrolet). The contact
led to Moffat spinning Nash Morris (#777 Premiair/Nulon Chevrolet) at the
Cutting. The incident damaged the front tires of Moffat’s car, forcing a pit
stop that cost them a lap.
Power Steering issues would send Perkins to the garage on
Lap 5, dropping them to last. The Overdrive Ford would lose 14 laps in repairs.
The first pit stops started on Lap 18. Jobe Stewart (#9
MetalMaster Chevrolet) pitted. Tim Slade (#26 Penrite Ford) and Jaxon Evans (#2
Truck Assist/Mobil 1 Toyota) pitted shortly after.
Lap 20 saw James Moffat pit. Lap 21 saw James Courtney (#48
Snowy River Caravans Ford) and David Russell (#31 Premiair/Nulon Chevrolet) pit
and both do driver changes.
Harri Jones (#4 Sherrin Rentals Chevrolet) and Mark
Winterbottom (#6 Monster Energy Ford) pitted and did driver changes on Lap 22.
Lap 24 saw a bunch of pit stops. Aaron Seton (#10 Bendix
Chevrolet) led them in. Followed by Lochie Dalton (#99 Total Energies
Chevrolet) and Will Davison (#19 Penrite Ford).
Jordan Boys (#96 Automotive Superstore/Finance Toyota)
followed them in. Last in that lap were Tony D’Alberto (#38 Shell V-Power
Ford).
And Nash Morris (#777 Premiair/Nulon Chevrolet) completed
Lap 25 pit stops.
Lap 26 saw four drivers pit. Scott Pye (#888 Red Bull/Ampol
Chevrolet) pitted and took the lead. Behind him was Todd Hazelwood (#17 Shell
V-Power Ford). Fabian Coulthard (#1 Optus/Mobil 1 Toyota) and Andre Heimgartner
(#8 R&J Batteries Toyota) followed them in.
The final pit driver was Lee Holdsworth (#18 DeWalt/Fuchs
Chevrolet), which he did on Lap 27.
30 laps in, all drivers are still running.
Walls/Perkins: -14 Laps
Moffat/Herne: -1 Lap
Fraser/Morris: -58 seconds
Gray/D’Alberto: -46 seconds
Cameron/Best: -42 seconds
Mechanical issues struck Ryan Wood and Jaxon Evans (#2 Truck
Assist/Mobil 1 Toyota) from Lap 37.
Lap 47 saw two dramas unfold. Macauley Jones (#96 Automotive
Superstore/Finance Toyota) spun and crashed at the Cutting, suffering major
damage to the rear. Not long after, Tony D’Alberto (#38 Shell V-Power Ford)
suffered left-rear suspension collapse.
The #96 would lose 1 lap in repairs. D’Alberto would lose 3
laps in repairs.
Half-way through the race, and every car is still on the
track. Matt Payne copped a drive-through penalty shortly after for pit lane
incidents.
At the 100 lap mark, Jackson Walls and Jack Perkins remained
last, 11 laps behind Rylan Grey and Tony D’Alberto and 15 laps behind the
leaders.
Kai Allen (#26 Penrite Ford) suffered brake issues during
the race that caused them to drop into the Bottom Five by lap 128.
Lap 139 saw Ryan Wood (#2 Truck Assist/NTI Toyota) crashed
at the tree. He limped back to the pits, but the damage sent car #2 into the
garage. Wood lost 10 laps in repairs and returned to the track 24th. But only
lasted 1 lap before pulling back into the garage. Wood would fall to last on
Lap 155, but would finish.
Six laps to go saw Kai Allen (#26 Penrite Ford) fly off the
road in the chase with green flames coming out of the wheel.
Lap 156 saw Chaz Mostert (#1 Optus/NTI Toyota) hit the
inside wall, then smash the outside wall at Forest Elbow, ending his race and
triggering a Safety Car.
The other retirement of the race came when Anton De Pasquale
(#18 DeWalt/Fuchs Chevrolet) ran out of fuel, failing to get to the finish
line.
The completion of the bottom five came with Ryan Wood and
Jaxon Evans (#2 Truck Assist/Mobil 1 Toyota). Then Jackson Walls and Jack
Perkins (#11 Overdrive Ford) and Rylan Grey and Tony D’Alberto (#17 Shell
V-Power Ford).
