Chaz Mostert is a veteran of the sport, now in his 12th
full-time season. 2015 would’ve been a full-time season, but had a massive
crash at Bathurst 2015 that snapped his leg in half and ended his season. He
raced in 26 races in 2013 for Dick Johnson Racing, then moved to Ford
Performance Racing/Rod Nash Racing/Tickford Racing for 6 years. Mostert moving
to Walkinshaw Andretti United in 2020. Despite a few up and down seasons,
Mostert inherited the 2025 Repco Supercars Championship after Red Bull Racing
choked it away with engine issues.
2026 has been a story of fast but unreliable for both
Mostert and teammate Ryan Wood. Wood has 3 last-place finishes and, prior to
this race, Mostert had 2. Mostert has 1 engine failure and 1 disqualification.
Wood has 2 mechanical failures and 1 laps-down finish because of crash damage.
Mostert was 9th in Practice 1. Then jumped to 3rd in
Practice 2. Mostert provisionally qualified 5th, and completed the Top 10
Shootout 5th.
Macauley Jones (#96 JWL Toyota) started last. Jones would
battle with Aaron Seton (#30 Superior Cranes Chevrolet) and Bayley Hall (#15
Supercheap Auto Chevrolet) for last in the early laps.
A bold strategy call on Lap 10 saw Declan Fraser (#777 Nulon
Chevrolet) pit and drop to last.
Fraser held last for 4 laps until Ben Gomersall (#5 Unit
Ford) pitted and fell behind. The early strategy called appeared to work for
Fraser, as he jumped Jack LeBrocq (#4 Sherrin Rental Chevrolet) in the field.
By lap 22, Bayley Hall had fallen to last when suddenly Chaz
Mostert (#25 Optus/Mobil 1 Toyota) slowed from 5th place exiting Turn 5.
Mostert would pull into the garage, and the team diagnosed
engine failure, ending his race.
Eight laps later, everything changed.
Matt Payne (#19 Penrite Ford) pulled into the garage on Lap
31 with electrical failure. The result, combined with Broc Feeney (#88 Red
Bull/Ampol Chevrolet) winning, meant Feeney wins the Sprint Cup.
Lap 35 saw Jayden Ojeda (#31 Nulon Chevrolet) spin while
attempting a pass on Andre Heimgartner (#8 R&J Batteries Toyota). Ojeda
recovered to 18th.
Completing the bottom five were Bayley Hall, Macualey Jones,
and Ben Gomersal.
And if you’re at all curious, the Sprint Cup last place
award goes to Jackson Walls.
