James Courtney is a veteran of the sport
and is in his 20th full-time season. This season is also Courtney’s last
full-time. Courtney started with Stone Brothers Racing in 2006. He switched to
Dick Johnson Racing in 2009 and took the 2010 Supercars Championship in 2010.
Courtney sensationally switched to the Holden Racing Team in 2011.
He had a disastrous title defence,
crashing at least once a round for the first half of the season. He won one
race, the second race at Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. Courtney was to
remain with the Holden Racing Team until 2020. In 2019, James Courtney would
hit a low, securing the last-place championship.
In 2020, Courtney would debut for Tekno
Autosports, but would almost immediately split with them and race with Tickford
Racing. His final two seasons full-time are with the Blanchard Racing Team.
Courtney was 22nd in Practice 1, but
jumped to 12th in Practice 2. Courtney qualified 9th, and improved to 5th in
the Top 10 shootout.
David Reynolds (#20 Tradie Chevrolet)
started the race in last after a brake failure before qualifying. However, on
the formation lap, a starter motor issue forced Macauley Jones (#96 Pizza Hut
Chevrolet) to be towed to the garage. Jones would lose a lap in repairs.
Will Davison (#17 Shell V-Power Ford)
wound up in the tires at Turn 3 on Lap 2. Davison would pit at the end of Lap
2.
Bryce Fullwood (#14 Shure/Welding
Solutions Chevrolet) served Will Davison (#17 Shell V-Power Ford) at Turn 1 on
Lap 2, copping a pit-lane drive Through penalty. Davison would have a damaged
left-rear tire and would pit. Another pit-stop before Lap 21 dropped Davison to
last.
Lap 30 saw Bryce Fullwood (#14
Shure/Welding Solutions Chevrolet) hit the tires at Turn 3.
Damage would force Fullwood into the
garage 2 laps later with an additional air hose holder loose in the car.
Fullwood did not realise his vehicle rested on Go Jacks, so he tried to depart,
launching the jack across the pit stall. Fullwood would lose 4 laps in repairs.
Lap 35 saw Nick Percat (#10 Bendix
Chevrolet) pulled into the garage with a broken rear shock. Percat would lose 8
laps in repairs.
Percat would hold last until near the
end of the race. Anton De Pasquale (#18 DeWalt Chevrolet) served James Courtney
(#7 Snowy River Caravans Ford) into the fence at Turn 11, ending Courtney’s
race and leaving him last. A 15-second time penalty would leave Anton 16th and
eliminated from the Chase.
The other race retirement was Richie
Stanaway (#62 Nulon Chevrolet), who crashed out with 3 laps to go, finishing
23rd.
Nick Percat (#10 Bendix Chevrolet),
Bryce Fullwood (#14 Shure/Welding Solutions Chevrolet) and Will Davison (#17
Shell V-Power Ford).
