Will Davison
(#17 Shell V-Power Ford) earned his 17th last-place finish at
Symmonds Plains after he and teammate Brodie Kostecki (#38 Shell V-Power Ford)
were disqualified from the first race at Symmonds Plains. The finish came in
Davison’s 576th start. It has been nearly 8 years since Will Davison
finished last.
Will Davison,
alongside James Courtney, are the two senior veterans of the Supercars. Will
Davison is considered the Denny Hamlin of Supercars, as he hasn’t won a
Supercars championship despite having raced for 19 seasons. Davison missed all
except 5 races of 2020 due to COVID, which caused his car owner to pull out of
the sport. Davison started at Dick Johnson Racing full-time in 2006. He moved
to the Holden Racing Team in 2009 and 2010. Davison then moved to Ford
Performance Racing in 2011 and stayed until 2014. He moved to Erebus
Motorsports, and stayed until 2016. He then moved to Tekno Autosports until
2018 when he was reunited with Ford Performance Racing, running for the 23Red
Racing team. Then COVID hit in 2020 and Davison lost his ride, but was reunited
with Dick Johnson Racing, whom he has race for since. Davison finished 2nd
in the championship in 2009 to Jamie Whincup, and 3rd in 2013 to
Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes. He was 7th in Practice 1, and slid
to 19th in Practice 2 before he qualified 16th.
Macauley
Jones (#96 Karate Kid/Pizza Hut Chevrolet) earned his 11th last-place finish at
Symmonds Plains after a lead-lap finish at Symmonds Plains. The finish came in
Jones’ 205th start. Macauley Jones becomes the first driver in 2025 to finish
last twice.
The son of
Brad Jones, Macauley Jones, is in his 7th full-time season. He spent his first
two years with Tim Blanchard Racing before moving to Brad Jones Racing in 2021,
where he would secure a last-place championship. Before this race, Macauley
Jones completed 93 races and the whole 2023 season without a last-place finish.
He was 11th in Practice 1, then plunged to slowest in Practice 2. He improved
to 18th in Qualifying.
Starting last,
Matthew Payne (#19 Penrite Oils Ford) remained there until lap 3, when he
passed Aaron Cameron (#3 Cooldrive Distribution Ford) at Turn 5. Meanwhile,
Cooper Murray (#99 Snap-On Chevrolet) fell to last place on lap 3.
Murray would
hold last until Lap 9, when he passed Aaron Cameron.
Lap 17 saw
Macauley Jones (#96 Karate Kid/Pizza Hut Chevrolet) punted Will Davison (#17
Shell V-Power Ford) into a spin on Lap 17, dropping Davison to last. Macauley
Jones would cop a 15-second time penalty for the hit, and would finish last.
Nick Percat
(#10 Bendix/Supa Glass Chevrolet) had a major issue during his pit stop,
dropping him to last. Aaron Cameron would pit on Lap 29 and drop to last, but
would overtake Macauley Jones on Lap 36. Macauley Jones would remain last for
the rest of the race. Post-race, however, it was discovered that both Dick Johnson
Racing cars had a technical breach, and were both disqualified.
Completing the
bottom five were Brodie Kostecki (#38 Shell V-Power Ford), Macauley Jones (#96
Karate Kid/Pizza Hut Chevrolet) Aaron Cameron (#3 Cooldrive Distribution Ford)
and Nick Percat (#10 Bendix/SupaGlass Chevrolet)
