Jamie Whincup picked up his 9th last-place finish of his career when his #88 Red Bull Holden finished under power, 3 laps down in the first race at Symmons Plains. The finish came in Whincup's 471st start.
Jamie Whincup is a legend of the Supercars series. Essentially Supercars' Jimmie Johnson, Whincup has seven championships and one-hundred and thirteen race wins over a 15-year full-time career. He was 4th in Practice 1, jumped to be fastest in Practice 2, but plummeted to 10th in Practice 3.
The day started badly for Jamie Whincup when he spun out of the second stage of Qualifying at turn 4, leaving him 15th.
Andre Heimgartner in the #7 Plus Fitness Nissan started the race in the rear after an engine misfire at the start of the first stage of qualifying, however at the end of lap 2 Jamie Whincup in the #88 - Holden collided with Chaz Mostert in the #55 Supercheap Auto/Castrol Ford, sending Whincup off the track at turn 6 and damaging the right-front of car Whincup's car, sending him to the garage, losing 2 laps in repairs. Whincup would hold last for the entire race.
Rounding out the bottom five was Garry Jacobson in the #3 Rabble.club Nissan after a flat tire on lap 33, Wildcard Jack Smith in the #4 SCT Logistics Holden, Jack LeBrocq in the #19 Truck Assist Holden in what is potentially his fourth-to-last race, and Simona De Silvestro in the #78 Harvey Norman/LG Super UHD TV Nissan.
