James Courtney picked up his 16th last-place finish of his career, while
Jack Perkins picked up his 9th last-place finish of his career, when their #25
Mobil 1/Boost Mobile Holden retired with Engine failure after 33 of the race's
161 laps. The finish came in Courtney's 397th start, Perkins' 142nd start, and
sees James Courtney take the lead of the 2018 Virgin Australia LASTCAR
championship.
While both James Courtney and Jack Perkins have been around for a long
time, James Courtney since 2005 and Jack Perkins since 2006, James Courtney has
had success, with 15 wins and a championship in 2010. Jack Perkins, not so
much. He's really struggled, and has had only two full seasons, in 2009 and
2014. James Courtney was 24th and last in the first practice, but Jack Perkins
got up to 11th in the 2nd, Co-Driver only Practice. Jack would drop to 20th out
of 22 for Practice 3, but shot up to 3rd in Practice 4. Car #22 sat out
Practice 5, but qualified fifth. Courtney ran 8th in the Top 10 shootout, and
they were third in the warm-up.
Simona De Silvestro in the #78 Harvey Norman/LG Super UHD TV Nissan
started the race in the rear, however by turn to Todd Hazelwood in the #35 Bigmate/Optus
Holden fell to the rear.
On lap 2 Ash Walsh in the #14 Freightliner Holden went off at the chase,
dropping him to the rear. Hazelwood dropped back to last on lap 5. Walsh went
off the road again on lap 9, dropping back to the rear.
Pitstops began on lap 14, and De Silvestro pitted, falling to the rear in
the process. On lap 15 Jack LeBrocq pitted and handed over to Jonothan Webb,
dropping to the rear in the process. After a driver swap and pitstop, Hazelwood’s
co-driver Bryce Fulwood fell to the rear.
On lap 22 David Russel in the #6 Monster Energy Ford was bounced into the
fence by Chaz Mostert in the #55 Supercheap Auto Ford, sending car #6 to the
garage and down to last, losing 13 laps in repairs. Waters would eventually
finish 23rd.
Behind Waters and Russell was Jack Perkins in the #25 Mobil 1/Boost
Mobile Holden retired with Engine failure on lap 33, triggering the first
Safety Car of the race. Courtney and Perkins fell to last on lap 46. Following
Perkins out was Dean Fiore and Michael Caurso in the #23 Industrial Athlete
Nissan, initially crashing at Turn 1 on lap #23, dropping a lap in repairs. He
continued but was forced to retire on Lap 71 with Engine failure.
Rounding out the positions behind Waters was Anton De Pasquale and Will
Brown in the #99 Penrite Holden after a crash on lap 139, losing 18 laps in
repairs. Rounding out the bottom five was Richie Stanaway in the #56 Rabble.club
Ford after losing almost 10 laps due to electrical dramas.
