Cameron Waters picked up his 3rd last-place finish of his career when his
#6 Monster Energy Ford retired with Driveshaft failure after 28 of the race's
40 laps. The finish came in Waters’ 83rd start.
Todd Hazelwood in the #35 BigMate/Optus Ford started the race in the
rear, however at turn 1 Jack LeBrocq in the #19 SS Signs Holden ran into David
Reynolds in the #9 Penrite Oils Holden and Richie Stanaway in the #56 Mega Bulk
Fuels Ford, spinning both LeBrocq and Stanaway, also damaging Reynolds’ car. Subsequently,
Reynolds was hit by Simona De Silvestro in the #78 - Nissan. The resulting tire
failure at turn 6 sent Reynolds into Hazelwood. The combination of incidents
sending Reynolds to the garage with a bent steering arm, dropping Reynolds to
last, losing 6 laps in repairs.
Reynolds held last until another driver came into the picture when, on
lap 30, Cameron Waters in the #6 Monster Energy Ford suffered a Driveshaft
failure, sending him to the garage. Reynolds dropped Waters to last on lap 36.
Rounding out the bottom five was Tim Blanchard in the #21 Cooldrive
Distribution Holden, after contact with Simona De Silvestro in the #78 Harvey
Norman/LG Super UHD TV Nissan sent him into the sand on lap 31, causing the
only Safety Car of the race, dropping 2 laps while being retrieved, Lee
Holdsworth in the #18 Preston Hire/Fuchs Holden after contact with De Silvestro
and James Golding in the #34 Wilson Security Holden and Simona De Silvestro in
the #78 Harvey Norman/LG Super UHD TV Nissan after a post-race reversal of
penalties, so Golding was given 15 seconds back while Simona was penalised 15
seconds, leaving her 22nd.
