Rick Kelly picked up his 6th last-place finish of
his career when his #15 Sengled/Castrol Nissan suffered a hung throttle that
caused a single-car crash that ended his run after 17 of the race’s 42 laps.
The finish came in Kelly’s 476th start.
Cameron McConvile started the race in the rear in the #3
Repair Management Australia Holden, however at turn 1 Mark Winterbottom in the
#5 Bottle-O Ford and Dale Wood in the #99 GB Galvanizing/ADVAN Holden, sending
Wood to the back with a right-rear puncture, dropping a lap in the process. A
mid-race penalty for spinning tires in the pit-stop saw Wood finish 25th.
Wood held last until lap 11 when Macauley Jones in the #4
Drillpro Service/NBS Holden pitted due to a flat tire and a subsequent spear
off the road at turn 5, dropping Macauley to the rear. Macauley Jones would go
on to finish in 24th.
Macauley Jones held last until lap 17 when Rick Kelly in the
#15 Sengled/Castrol Nissan suffered a jammed throttle heading into turn 11,
crashing hard into the tire barrier on lap 17, triggering the first safety car
of the race.
Next to fall out was Shane Van Gisbergen in the #97 Red Bull
Holden Racing Team after a pass attempt on Garth Tander in the #33 Wilson
Security Holden on lap 39, they made contact, and both went wide at turn 6.
Taking the opportunity, Jason Bright in the #56 MEGA Bulk Fuels Ford dived
under both, colliding with Van Gisbergen, breaking the steering on Van
Gisbergen's car, and additional contact with Tander left Tander with a damaged
tire, necessitating a pitstop. Van Gisbergen dropped to 27th while Tander
dropped to 26th.
